Doha: The Supreme Committee for Delivery & Legacy (SC) has unveiled a mural paying tribute to the workers involved in the delivery of Al Bayt Stadium.
The 60,000-capacity stadium in the northern city of Al Khor will host the opening match of Qatar 2022.
Like the stadium, the mural’s design is inspired by the patterns of ‘bayt al sha’ar’ — the tents historically used by people in Qatar and the Gulf region, SC said in a tweet yesterday, sharing the pictures.
The mural is located in two areas inside the stadium, first one at the entrance for the players and the second mural on the upper floors that can be seen from the stands. Below the mural, which has photos of all the workers, there is a banner that has thank you written in different languages of the workers.
In a video shared by Roadto2022, Issa Rashid Al-Muhaizeh, son of Rashid Al-Muhaizeh, an Engineer at Bayt stadium who passed away following his struggle with cancer, talks about this legacy: “Whenever we pass through this place, we remember my father who used to come every day from the beginning of the project when the land of the stadium was barren until it became an architectural masterpiece. I never imagined seeing my father’s picture hanging in the home stadium forever."
Another contractor Sridaran Sivanganam added that, "my workers were very happy and they went around looking for their pictures on the mural and they clicked a picture of mine and shared it with me. I was happy as that’s something they can take back home. I think it was good gesture done by the Bayt."
Designed to resemble a traditional tent used by nomadic people in Qatar and the region, Al Bayt boasts a range of sustainability features. The light-coloured external membrane reduces heat absorption and supports the efficient use of cooling technology, while the see-through retractable roof reduces the need for energy consumption and allows natural sunlight to help the turf grow.
