DOHA: Traditional Qatari poetry took centre stage during Qatar National Day celebrations at Qatar Foundation’s Academic Bridge Programme (ABP) yesterday.
Two poetry sessions were presented by Qatari poet Hamad Al Braidi and ABP alumni.
Other cultural and traditional activities included camel riding as a new feature to the annual celebrations at ABP.
Arabian horses, a falcon and vintage cars were on display, while traditional Arda (sword dance) was performed and participants were given opportunity to get henna designed on their palms.
“The event celebrates the country’s culture and traditions and educate those not Qataris,” said Dr Bryan Lewallen, Director, ABP, dressed in traditional Qatari attire.
The event was organised by the ABP Student Services Department, in collaboration with the ABP Student Association and student and alumni volunteers. Faculty, staff and students gathered to experience the traditional Qatari setting.
Moza Al Boainain, Assistant Director, Student Services, ABP, said, “The National Day is a dear occasion that comes each year in which we follow the march of the giant renaissance our country is experiencing in all fields and which made Qatar join, in record time, the ranks of well developed countries.
“We will be able to achieve our national goals because the leadership and people work together in harmony and cooperation. We are aware of our local, Arab, Islamic and international responsibilities since the time of Sheikh Jassim, the founder, who started a bright era for Qatar.”
The event was held ahead of Qatar National Day on December 18 so that students could celebrate this occasion and express patriotism before they begin semester exams followed by the winter break.
