Qatar Museums announces host of activities for September

Qatar Museums has launched several events and activities catering to a wide array of interests and artistic passions, hosted across its cultural institutions throughout September. The community can look forward to a range of culturally enriching programmes designed to promote creativity and take art beyond four walls. 

The Museum of Islamic Art (MIA) will hold ‘Beautiful Memories of Palestine’ from Saturday to Thursday from 9am to 6.30 pm and on Friday from 1.30 pm to 6.30 pm. The exhibition runs until December 31, 2021. This exhibition is a pictorial journey through Palestine as seen through the Rare Book Collection in the Library at the Museum of Islamic Art. 

The books included in this exhibition range from 1610 CE to 1930 CE and are largely published in European languages as travel journals, stories, and histories. For those who cannot visit the museum, you can also experience a virtual tour of the exhibition along with related activities for children online by visiting www.mia.org.qa/en/. 

Ottoman Design course will be held on September 7 and 8 from 4 pm – 5.30 pm. Students aged 12 to 14 will learn about Ottoman Islamic design, painting, gilding, and brushwork techniques. As well as completing an illumination painting, by the end of the course, each student will have a small portfolio of painting and drawing studies to take home. 

Other activities to be hosted at MIA include, Jewellery Illustration Art Workshop on September 13, 15 from 3 pm – 4.30 pm, Crazy Carpets on September 19, from 3 pm – 4.00 pm, Pencil Drawing Workshop with Ismail Azzam on September 26 and 27 from 4 pm – 6.00 pm and Planet Kids Online on September 28 from 3 pm – 4.30 pm. For the full roster of MIA activities taking place in September, please visit http://www.mia.org.qa/en/whats-on/calendar-2.   

Meanwhile, the National Museum of Qatar (NMoQ) is scheduled to host activities, including Date Preserving on September 11 from 10 am to 12 pm, to celebrate Palm Tree Day. NMoQ, in cooperation with the Gharsa Home Gardening Initiative will have a live demonstration workshop on date palms. In this workshop, participants will learn how to harvest, preserve and store dates using different methods such as drying dates and extracting molasses from them. The museum will also hold a webinar titled ‘Our Plants Legacy’ in Arabic on September 29, from 6.30 pm to 7.30 pm. Speakers would include Ali Al Henzab; Environmental Consultant, Mohamed Al Khater; An integrative medicine & naturopathy consultant; and Mariam Al Dosari; Native Plants Specialist.

Other events include Native Plants and their Environment on September 26 (English) and September 28 (Arabic) from 12 pm to 1 pm.

Fire Station: Artists in Residence will host Youth Summer Programme - Mariam Al Shaikh (BOTO): A New Form of Expression from September 5 to 9 from 3 pm – 5 pm. 

In this workshop, 16- to 25-year-olds will learn to repurpose plain objects into functional art pieces. Using concrete pots, they will be able to explore their creativity. BOTO is a brand that focuses on creating functional art. The beauty behind every piece is in its cracks and details. 

The final piece is meant to inspire participants as they look closer. Note: Materials for this workshop are optional. Participants can either prepare the requested materials or attend the workshop to learn about creating functional art pieces. Materials: Adhesive spray, modeling clay (New clay), pottery kit tool, acrylic colours, and brushes.
