Doha: Hamad Medical Corporation denied that there was an error on the medical staff's part when inserting an intravenous drip on a newborn baby who was treated at Al Sadd emergency on December 27.
HMC issued a statement that was read in a radio show wherein the doctors wished the newborn girl a speedy recovery and stressed that the best medical care was provided at the Paediatric Emergency Centre and at all its healthcare facilities.
Regarding the complaint voiced by the girl's parents in a radio show few days ago, HMC stated that after reviewing the child's medical file it was found that the baby came to the children's emergency on December 27, 2021 at 2:30 am complaining of high temperature, continuous crying and poor breastfeeding.
It added that the child's condition remained stable along with normal vital signs while under observation but at quarter past four, the girl's breathing suddenly stopped which required rapid medical intervention and the pulse returned 10 minutes later after cardiopulmonary resuscitation and 10 minutes after that vital signs returned to normal.
The statement added that while inserting a breathing tube into the trachea, a large quantity of milk came out which confirmed that the baby's breathing stopped due to severe reflux from the esophagus into the trachea, which led to the suffocation.
The laboratory results of the fluid sample from the girl's spinal cord, which was taken by the consulting doctor, indicated the presence of a virus that led to inflammation in the brain tissue, said the statement.
The statement concluded by confirming that there was no error on the part of the nurse who installed the IV tube into the baby, which was inserted when she came into the observation room and about an hour before the sudden respiratory arrest.
The HMC clarification comes after parents of the baby girl called in a programme on Qatar Radio few days back claiming negligence on the part of the nurse and HMC led to the damage in the brain tissue. The parents asked for an investigation into the matter through the radio programme.
