New York: Patrick Corbin became the first nine-game winner of the season as the Arizona starter pitched the Diamondbacks to an 8-4 victory over the Chicago Cubs yesterday.
The 23-year-old Corbin worked through six innings, striking out five and allowing four runs, to improve his spectacular start to 9-0 for the National League West-leading Diamondbacks (32-24)
His mark ties a team record for consecutive wins to start a season, matching Brandon Webb in 2008.
Arizona broke a 4-4 tie in the sixth inning where they scored three times.
Paul Goldschmidt had a run-scoring single in the inning, his 46th RBI of the year, and finished 2-for-3 with three runs scored.
In Baltimore, Chris Davis belted his Major League-leading 20th home run to spark the Orioles past Detroit 4-2.
Baltimore trailed 2-0 in the seventh before Davis drilled a homer to right field and the home Orioles added two more runs to take the lead.
Davis finished the game 2-for-4 while his nearest American League offensive competitor, Detroit’s Miguel Cabrera, went 1-for-4.
Cabrera is batting .367 with 65 RBIs to lead the AL and second-place Davis, hitting .357 with 52 RBIs, but he trails Davis’ home run total by three.
In Oakland, the Athletics put an end to pitcher Chris Sale’s scoreless innings streak to complete a sweep of the Chicago White Sox with a 2-0 win.
Josh Donaldson’s sacrifice-fly in the sixth inning ended Sale’s stretch of 28 innings without a run allowed and handed him his first loss since April 18.
Jarrod Parker tossed 6 1/3 scoreless innings for the A’s, Jed Lowrie added an RBI single in the eighth and Oakland took three straight from Chicago. In Pittsburgh, the Pirates rallied from a 4-0 deficit to top the Cincinnati Reds 5-4 in 11 innings.
Travis Snider’s RBI single in the 11th completed the comeback win and tied Pittsburgh (35-22) with the Reds (35-22) for second place in the National League Central.
Pedro Alvarez and Garrett Jones each hit homers to help pull the Pirates out of the hole created when Cincinnati scored four times in the first inning.
