As many as 680,000 passengers used Doha Metro to reach Corniche area between November 26 to December 4, during the closure of the Corniche Street, according to Qatar Railways Company (Qatar Rail).
The stations included in these figures are National Museum, Souq Waqif, Corniche, Al Bidda, West Bay, DECC and Ras Bu Abboud.
The highest turnout from the public is at Al Bidda station which is located within walking distance of the venue of the 11th Qatar International Food Festival (QIFF) .
Qatar Rail said this development confirms the integral role of the Doha Metro in enhancing the public transport system, providing an effective alternative means of transportation and facilitation of the movement of individuals. In addition, Doha Metro aids the free flow of traffic, avoiding congestion, especially during temporary road closures.
Moreover, metrolink and metroexpress services continued to transport commuters throughout the Corniche area. The two services provided alternative routes during the closure period, which helped transport the public around the Corniche area, allowing them to reach their destinations easily.
QIFF will run until December 17 which features over 160 food stalls and kiosks, live cooking shows, entertainment shows and activities such as live bands performance. It is open from 3pm to 11pm during weekdays, while 3pm to 1am on weekends.
The Doha Metro continues to provide football fans with a seamless transportation experience that takes them to the stadium with ease, away from traffic congestion, which usually constitutes a significant obstacle in large public events. Its service hours have been extended until December 18: from Saturday to Thursday, from 6am to 3am; and on Friday, from 9am to 3am.
