Doha, Qatar: Comedians Mr. Funny and Mammito Eunice are looking forward to entertaining the Doha public today when they take to the stage for the ‘African Night of Laughter’ organised by Oryx Entertainment at the Holiday Inn Hotel.
Speaking to the media yesterday, Mr. Funny, whose fame was bolstered by social media, said that despite being known more for his comedy and skits, his strength remains stand-up, and the fans will be entertained when they come out for the show.
“I’m delighted to be here in Qatar, and I have always been a stand-up comedian, but people only got to know me more thanks to social media,” the Nigerian comedian said yesterday. “The platform has made it easy to become popular these days compared to being a stand-up, which is a bit more difficult for a comedian to get noticed. People always question me about being a stand-up comedian, but I have been doing that for a long time.”
Mammito, on the other hand, said while she is excited to see the audience, she has enjoyed moving around Doha and getting a taste of the local hospitality.
The Kenyan comic said, “I’m excited to be here in Qatar; it’s such a beautiful country. Nice lighting everywhere, and I have tried some food, and the people have been so nice.”
Meanwhile, the General Manager of Oryx Group Entertainment, Famous Aluya, said he looks forward to an entertaining show aiming to tell African stories by Africans while portraying Qatar’s hospitality.
“Basically, this Africa project that Oryx has embarked on in the last few years is about what Africa stands for. We do believe that Africans should tell our story. We want to tell our stories through entertainment and culture. So this is why we are focused on projecting African entertainment as much as possible by bringing in the best African artists,” Aluya told the media.
He added that the two comics represent the African youth, and their popularity across social media made them the perfect fit to tell the continent’s story.
“When we decided to choose comedians, we went for popular demand. We decided to go for artists, comedians who are appreciated. They have a greater influence on the community here in Qatar. So we decided to go for that because this is what the people want. Also, they have individually represented what the youth life is about, the struggle — starting from nowhere, becoming who they are despite the obvious challenges,” he added.
Other acts for the show include MC Bob, Dj Diamond, Dj Rome, MC Justice and MC Gish. Tickets for the events can be bought online or at the venue.
