DOHA: Qatar University College of Law (QU-LAWC) marked International Anti-corruption Day on Sunday to raise awareness on the importance of building a legal culture among various segments of society and individuals to resist corruption and its manifestations.
QU President Dr Hassan Rashid Al Derham (pictured), Qatar Attorney General Dr Ali bin Fetais Al Marri, Chairman of the Administrative Control and Transparency Authority Saad bin Ibrahim Al Mahmoud, QU VP and Chief Financial Officer Dr Humaid Al Midfaa, along with other senior QU officials were present.
Over 100 students from LAWC participated in the event which included a male vs female debate on the “Illicit Gains Law: between supporters and opponents”, a presentation on “education’s role in anti-corruption” delivered by Dr Reem Al Ansari, LAWC Assistant Professor of Law and an animation video screening on “Anti-corruption” produced by the College.
It was an opportunity for the students to gain further insight into Qatar’s anti-corruption policies and contribute to the dialogue on preventative measures and legal processes.
The debate, which was moderated by Dr Al Ansari and LAWC Assistant professor of law, Dr Ahmed Samir Hassanein saw 80 per cent in favour (male team) to 20 percent opposed (female team).
In his remarks, Dr Al Derham said: “Raising awareness and dissemination of legal culture among the community are key factors in preventing all aspects of corruption. Hence, the collaboration between educational institutions and the various entities across the country plays a core role in establishing a legal culture to raise the community’s awareness on this timely issue, and show its negative impact on nations and societies.”
