Morocco continued their beautiful FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022 script beating Portugal by a lone goal to book a historic semi-final place.
The Atlas Lions have become the first team from Africa and the Arab world to reach this stage of the competition, showing spirit and heart — cheered on by a sea of red at the Al Thumama Stadium.
Head coach Walid Regragui had charged his players to want for more, and they responded on the pitch as Youssef En-Nesyri’s goal just before halftime ensured victory over Cristiano Ronaldo and Portugal. The win is of major significance for football, not just in Africa or the MENA region but the entire world, especially as this feat was achieved in a World Cup hosted in the Arab world.
It shows that not so ‘fancied’ teams can compete at the top level. Morocco’s latest win comes after victories over Belgium in the group and Spain in the Round of 16. They have conceded only one goal in their five games at the tournament, shutting out some of football’s top names.
Man of the match Yassine Bounou said after the game, “Honestly, it is really hard to describe this moment. I thank my teammates and the supporters who have had our backs.”
“I told the players before the match we had to write history for Africa,” said head coach Walid Regragui.
“We’re becoming the team that everyone loves at this World Cup. We’re showing that even if you don’t have as much talent, with desire, heart and belief, you can achieve,” the 47-year-old added.
Morocco will now play against France in the semi-final.
