New York: New York captain Derek Jeter got a hit, an RBI and scored a run in his first game of the season after recovering from a broken ankle to help the Yankees to an 8-4 win over the Kansas City Royals yesterday, then left the game with a quadriceps injury.

Jeter served as the designated hitter in his first game since breaking his left ankle in the 2012 playoffs but was benched in the sixth inning with tightness in his quadriceps muscle. He will undergo a scan later.

“I felt fine,” Jeter told reporters. “I felt good. I thought I was moving good, first to third, scored, ran out a couple a of ground balls ... so everything felt good up until that point.

“They MRI everything, so I hope it’s not a big deal.”

The Yankees improved to 50-42 with the win but remain fourth in the American League East, six games behind the leading Boston Red Sox, the same amount of games the Royals (43-46) trail the AL Central-leading Detroit Tigers.

Boston’s Daniel Nava, who had been 0-5 at the plate, singled in the winning run in the 10th inning for the Red Sox to complete an 8-7 victory over Seattle.

Detroit missed a chance to pad their lead on top of the Central division, losing 6-3 to Chicago White Sox. REUTERS
