Doha, Qatar – The Ministry of Public Health has issued essential guidelines for fasting safely with diabetes during Ramadan:
1. High-risk groups: Children, pregnant women, and individuals on multiple insulin injections should avoid fasting due to risks of hypoglycemia or hyperglycemia.
2. Glucose monitoring: Keep a glucose monitor handy and check levels at least four times a day—this does not break your fast.
3. Low blood sugar: If levels drop below 70 mg/dL or symptoms occur, break your fast immediately.
4. High blood sugar: If levels exceed 300 mg/dL, stop fasting and rehydrate.
5. Medication: Taking insulin or injectable diabetes medication before iftar does not invalidate fasting.
6. Hydration: Drink 8–10 glasses of water between iftar and suhoor to prevent dehydration.
7. Emergency preparedness: Carry a small treat (candy, juice, or glucose tablets) for low blood sugar episodes.
8. Blood pressure: Consult your doctor about medication adjustments and monitor blood pressure regularly.
Following these tips ensures a safer fasting experience for those managing diabetes.
