All arrangements are in place to stage the 6th Qatargas Chess Championship, organised by the Qatar Chess Association, from March 21-23.
The championship, which will see events taking place under two different tournament formats, will take place at the Al Mirqab Mall.
On the opening day, the Qatargas Rapid Chess Tournament for youth U-16 will begin at 4.30pm and will be followed by the final rounds on March 22, starting at 2.00pm.
The Rapid Open U-16 tournament will be conducted according to the Swiss System and will consist of nine rounds in which each player will be given 15 minutes (without increment).
The Qatargas Open Blitz Tournament will take place on the third and final day, starting at 10.30am and will be carried out over nine rounds until 6.30pm.
Blitz Open Tournament will also be conducted according to the same non- eliminating tournament format, consisting of nine rounds (5 minutes + 3 seconds increment per move, starting from move 1).
The closing ceremony will take place at the same venue, starting from 6.30pm.
Commenting on the tournament, President of Qatar Chess Association Mohammed Al Modaihki said: “There will be valuable prizes on offer for the winners of both under-16 and open categories.”
“We are expecting to see big numbers in terms of participation, and the interested players can registration themselves at the Qatar Chess Training Centre for Boys, located at Al Maahad Street in New Salata today and tomorrow from 4.00pm-6.00pm on both days for a fee of QR50,” said Al Modaihki, who is also the Executive Director for International Relations of the World Chess Federation.
