Doha, Qatar: The Spring Equinox, marking the equal hours of night with day, occurs today, March 20, 2025, the Qatar Meteorology Department announced. It added that this event signifies the end of winter and the beginning of the first day of spring in Qatar and other parts of the Northern Hemisphere.

In a social media post, the department explained the phenomenon, stating that the sun is perpendicular to the equator on this day, so that the hours of the night are equal with the day.

"The weather tends to gradually warm in conjunction with the gradual increase in daylight hours," stated the post. This will continue until summer solstice in the third week of June.

The beginning of spring in Northern Hemisphere also marks the astronomical fall in the Southern.

A fun fact about equinoxes is that the sun shines equally on both the hemispheres during these days. This is why they are also the only times of the year when both the Earth's North and South Poles are simultaneously illuminated by the Sun.
