Four-day Qatar International Cup Weightlifting Championships conclude

Local favourite Fares Ibrahim Hassouna topped the standings as the 6th edition of the Qatar International Cup weightlifting competition which concluded in Doha yesterday.
Fares, who won the gold medal in the 96kg category on Sunday and booked his place in next year’s Tokyo Olympics Games, topped the Men’s Robi Points table with a 907.344 mark.
The local hero came up with a dazzling performance to push Rio Olympics gold medallist (85kg category), Kianoush Rostami of Iran to the second spot in the standings with 899.904 points. Turkey’s Daniyar Ismayilov, the silver winner in Rio who made a clean sweep in the men’s 73 weight class, finished third with 836.448 Robi points.
The 21-year-old two-time Junior World Champion and a silver medallist at the 2018 Asian Games, Fares successfully lifted 404kgs (176kg+228kg) to push Rostami to second place in their contest on Sunday.
Robi Points, a system developed by Robert Nagy, former Technology Director of the IWF, is the official IWF calculation method for comparing individual athletes’ total results scores across each of the bodyweight categories.
Yesterday, at the Radisson Blu Hotel, Armenians Gor Minasyan and Ruben Alesanyan booked the top two spots in the podium by sharing two gold medals among them in the men’s over 109kg weight class, the final event of the Doha Championship.
The Rio Olympics silver medallist, Gor lifted a total of 424kg by topping the snatch with a 198kg mark, followed by a clean and jerk of 226 to win the gold in Doha.
Ruben failed to lift more than 180kg in his snatch attempts, but raised 10 kilos more than his compatriot to win the gold in clean and jerk. He finished second overall.
Algeria’s Walid Bidani 415 (190kg+225kg) won the overall bronze medal. New Zealand’s David Liti also secured a spot on the podium after recording the second best clean and jerk mark (231kg) in the event.
The Championship was is hosted by the Qatar Weightlifting Federation (QWF) under the auspices of the International Weightlifting Federation.
