DOHA: Qatar Red Crescent Society (QRCS) Office in Turkey has launched $41,000 urgent relief project to provide food for the people of Moadamiyah, a town on the outskirts of Damascus that has been under siege for seven consecutive months.
QRCS personnel entered Moadamiyah, urgently bringing basic food items such as bulgur, rice, lentils, sugar, ghee, tea and vegetable oil.
Over two stages, they distributed 410 food packages to 2,470 beneficiaries.
Moadamiyah is a town in southern Syria, administratively a part of the Darayya District in the Rif Dimashq Governorate, located 10km southwest of Damascus.
The town’s 45,000 population is suffering severe food and medicine shortages, as the markets are now empty and most shops are shut down.
Many babies are at risk of malnutrition due to lack of infant formula.
QRCS personnel are also working on the urgent relief intervention for Madaya, distributing $30,000 worth of food aid to the distressed people in the town.
Despite the difficulties, more families are receiving 1.5kg food packages, at a cost of $200 each, which reflects how challenging it is to secure food items inside the blockade.
A few months ago, QRCS conducted relief interventions in Doumaand Al Zabadani to support hospitals with $70,000 medical supplies, ambulance vehicles, power generator, fuel and blood bags. The Peninsula
