DOHA: A wide variety of flowers are showcased at a three-day exhibition opened yesterday at farmers’ market (Al Mazrouah Yard) near Umm Salal Stadium.
Floral arrangements and landscape designs are on show and flower and fruit plants are for sale at the event.
The exhibition is organised by the Agriculture Affairs Department at the Ministry of Environment, with the Public Parks Department at the Ministry of Municipality and Urban Planning.
The farmers’ markets officially opened for a new season early last month, selling locally produced vegetables and fruits along with fish, livestock and other items, at discount prices at three locations in the country.
Other markets are in Al Wakrah and Al Khor-Al Dhakira.
The three markets are open from Thursdays to Saturdays from 7am to 5pm. They open in winter and usually continue until May.
Some 46 types of locally-grown farm fresh vegetables are available at low prices at the markets.
This year, over 70 local farms are taking part.
According to the Ministry of Environment, 321 tonnes of fresh vegetables and 215 tonnes of fresh fruits were sold at the three markets last month.
Of these, Al Mazrouah in Umm Salal, being a larger market, accounted for 130 tonnes.
As for fruits, the market had a share of 73 tonnes out of 215 at all three markets.
The Agricultural Affairs Department supervises the markets which aim to encourage local farmers and growers.
