Moscow: Qatar’s Foreign Minister H E Dr Khalid bin Mohamed Al Attiyah said yesterday that discussions held with his Russian counterpart Sergei Lavrov were constructive.
The Foreign Minister said that bilateral relations with Russia were based on respect. He also highlighted bilateral trade and cooperation in the field of energy, expressing hope of further cooperation.
While speaking at a joint press conference with Lavrov, Al Attiyah said that the international community has a responsibility to shoulder in face of the terror threat that faces the Middle East. He said the threat required that Arab countries work with friendly nations to establish security and stability, hence yesterday’s visit. The Minister added that talks with Lavrov were meant to exchange views on developments in the region and stress the importance of maintaining peace.
Developments in Syria were the top priority of today’s talks, the Minister said. He stressed that the international community must seek a solution to the Syrian crisis based on the Geneva agreement rather than starting from scratch, warning that failure to do so will not benefit any party.
The Foreign Minister stressed that Qatar’s stance on Syria was to establish a ruling authority with full powers during the
transition.
The second aspect of Qatar’s position was to establish security and stability in Syria in order to complete the transition of power.
