Doha: Qatar General Electricity & Water Corporation (Kahramaa) has successfully commissioned Al Thumama Super 220/132kV Substation 1.

Al Thumama substation serves the new residential area at Al Thumama by transferring bulk power from Ras Abu Fontas B and Messaieed Power Generation Plants. The substation connects to Doha South super as well, which is the interconnection point of the GCC grid.

220kV and 132 kV over-head lines linked to Al Thumama have been replaced with extra high voltage cables that are laid  underground. That includes seven OHLs linked to Ras Abu Fontas A, Ras Abu Fontas B, Al Wukair Super and Al Wakra substations, comprising a total length of 54 km.

The project was completed before the target deadline, as over-head lines replacement with cables was essential to complete the basic infrastructure projects of Ashghal and Qatar Rail aimed at year 2022 in the area.

The main challenge of the project was to dismantle over-head lines that were installed over years and link the connected network substations in a tight deadline to ensure continual power supply to all customers, with no interruptions.

The project comprises 13 contracts at a total value of QR788m. This includes 220 kV cable installations for a total length of 183 km and 132 kV at a total length if 58 km, as well as dismantling 54 km of over-head lines. Combined Work hours exceeded 748,147  man-hours, with no lost time due to injury (LTI).
