DOHA: The persistent rain did not stop falconers from going to the Al Gannas Society headquarters on the first day of registration for the Qatar International Falcon and Hunting Festival 2016 yesterday.
Last evening saw significant turnout of Qatari falconers who wish to join the annual festival organised by Al Gannas Society in cooperation with Katara Cultural Village Foundation under the patronage of H E Sheikh Joaan bin Hamad Al Thani.
Some of the registrants said they braved the inclement weather to avoid rush and missing to register as the registration period is only for four days.
Young falconer Abdulla Khalid Al Sulaiti, who was one of the first participants to register yesterday, said he came to register despite the rain because he believes he is one of the strong contenders at this year’s festival having joined last year.
He said the festival is a much anticipated event for many falconers in Qatar and the region.
Another participant Fahad Al Al Marri was of the same view the month-long event is one of the most important festivals in the world that give attention to heritage and tradition.
Inscribed on the List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity, falconry is a famous heritage sport shared by various countries in the region including Qatar. During the registration, the falconers brought their falcons for the screening committee to assess whether they fulfil the requirements and are eligible for participation.
The registration continues until Monday from 4pm to 8pm at Katara Building 33.
