DOHA: Qatar University (QU) yesterday signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the Ministry of Environment to establish collaboration in the field of research and development and training Qataris in the environmental and agricultural areas.
The deal was signed by Minister of Environment H E Ahmed Amer Mohamed Al Humaidi and QU President Dr Hassan Rashid Al Derham in the presence of officials from both sides.
It will help meet the needs of environmental challenges at technical and legislative levels to develop effective and appropriate environmental and agricultural solutions.
The agreement includes collaboration in activities in the field of development, training and education. Both sides will also collaborate to establish a flexible environment of communication between research centres, colleges and departments in QU and the departments in the ministry.
The deal also establishes collaboration in research publication and meetings between experts and specialists to discuss the best methods of activating it.

It will also provide training opportunities for Qataris and help exchange experiences between academic and government entities.
Al Humaidi added: “The ministry is taking an important responsibility in developing the Qatari environment using sustainable methods for the benefit of next generations.
“The target cannot be accomplished without stating policies and plans on the bases of scientific facts, data and indicators needed to measure the level of development. Then, right decisions that promote economic development and preserve natural resources can be taken.”
Dr Al Derham said the MoU is part of QU’s pillars to corporate with ministries and organisations which contribute to achieving Qatar National Vision 2030.
He said the importance of the MoU lies in the fact that is aims at conserving the environment to achieve sustainable development.
In the past, QU stared important environmental initiatives such as the bio-fuel project; research on palm trees; and the launch of ‘Janan’ which contributes to enriching marine data, he added.
“The MoU is in line with Qatar’s endeavours to establish a knowledge-based economy and ensure sustainable development to preserve the rights of having a healthy developed life for our next generations.”
