DOHA: Qatar Charity (QC) has provided free medical treatment to some 94,723 poor patients, including children, in 15 countries at a cost of QR7.8m.
Sixty-eight medical camps were set up in the countries to conduct checkups and surgeries. Patients from Sudan, Ethiopia, Yemen, Niger, Palestine, Mauritania, Sri Lanka, Indonesia, Nigeria, Jordon, Somalia, Iraq, Tunisia, Comoros and Ghana benefited. The camps provided services, including open heart surgeries for children, angiography, cochlear implants, treatment for eye diseases and illnesses affecting the urinary tract.
Patients with congenital malformations (abnormalities at birth) burns, harelip (a congenital cleft or fissure in the midline of the upper lip) were also treated. Beneficiaries also received free medicines and consultation. Portable clinics were deployed in rural areas and remote villages.
The initiative was launched in Sudan where 18 camps were set up. Over 55,000 patients received treatment at a cost of QR3.4m. Three camps were held in Ethiopia at a cost of QR500,000, benefiting some 11,000 patients. Training was provided to local doctors in some camps to conduct surgeries.
