Qatari citizens turned out in large numbers yesterday at referendum polling stations to vote on draft constitutional amendments, underscoring their commitment to their homeland. The enthusiasm displayed by voters demonstrated a shared dedication to the ideals of citizenship and national belonging, marking a significant step in the country’s journey and reinforcing its unity. There was widespread satisfaction with the smooth, well-coordinated organization of the voting process, as many citizens participated with a deep sense of patriotism. The draft constitutional amendments to the permanent constitution of the State of Qatar received a popular approval rate of 90.6 percent of the total valid votes. The referendum saw participation of 84 percent of eligible citizens, as the percentage of votes in favour of the constitutional amendments reached 89 percent, while the percentage of votes that did not approve reached 9.2 percent, while the percentage of invalid votes reached 1.8 percent. In response to the call from the Amir, H H Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, urging all citizens to take part in the public referendum, a historic number of Qatari citizens over the age of 18 participated, reflecting a shared responsibility for nation-building and a unified future. The Amir himself participated in the referendum by casting his vote at the 15th Referendum Committee headquarters in Barahat Msheireb. H H the Amir said in a post on his official X account that Qataris celebrated with the fruits of the labors of the forefathers, showing solidarity and love for the country and showcasing the values of unity and justice, stressing that those values will be protected and preserved. The referendum on the constitutional amendments represents a historic milestone in Qatar’s ongoing journey of growth, advancement, and social unity. Speaking to local media after casting their votes, many citizens expressed that the referendum is a significant and positive step in Qatar’s path to renaissance, supporting its development and progress. The referendum strengthens the principle of Shura, the foundation of governance in Qatar, and serves as clear evidence of the people’s active role in decision-making that affects them, further strengthening the bond between Qatar’s wise leadership and its citizens. The General Referendum Committee has put considerable thought and effort into ensuring a smooth and efficient process, earning widespread praise for the flexible and swift voting procedure and accessible polling centres. The referendum offered two voting methods: the first involved direct voting by casting a paper ballot or voting electronically in person at designated polling stations, where voters presented their Qatari ID or Digital Qatar ID. The second method enabled remote voting via the “Metrash2” app, available to citizens both within Qatar and abroad.
