DOHA: The State Cabinet yesterday approved a draft law on preservation of Arabic language that forces all ministries and other public institutions to use Arabic as the official language.
Prime Minister and Interior Minister H E Sheikh Abdullah bin Nasser bin Khalifa Al Thani chaired the Cabinet’s regular weekly meeting. The draft law states that ministries, official institutions, public educational institutions in all levels of education and municipalities must use Arabic in all documents, contracts, correspondence, labels, programmes, publications and advertisements. Universities and institutions of higher education, overseen by the government, are also required to teach Arabic language in all science and knowledge streams.
The Cabinet reviewed a study prepared for the development of postal sector.
This comes as part of the development of Qatar Postal Services Company (Q-Post) in order to open the sector for private investment, encourage competition and provide universal postal services to individuals and business sectors across the country with high quality and reasonable prices.
The Cabinet also reviewed the first quarterly report of the committee organizing heavy transport on their actions during period spanning from January to March 2015.
The committee has been assigned to examine all matters related to heavy transport, in particular to study ways to organise heavy transport and propose practical and appropriate mechanisms.
The committee has recommended establishment of a database for all owners of heavy transport including individuals, companies and commercial institutions, registration of transportation and heavy machinery and equipment owned by citizens, and development of a unified model for contracts to hire heavy transport equipment.
The Cabinet also approved a proposal by the Ministry of Interior to amend certain provisions of the Cabinet Resolution No. (3) of 2003 establishing a permanent committee to manage Abu Samra port.
The weekly Cabinet session also approved a draft air services agreement between Qatar and the Kyrgyz Republic.
It approved a draft memorandum of cooperation between the Ministry of Transport and Communications of Qatar and the International Maritime Organization (IMO) on the State’s involvement in the review plan of the member states of the Organisation.
