Ensure return of abducted Qataris, Iraq told

DOHA: The fourth session of the joint high-level cooperation committee between Qatar and Kuwait held here on Monday called on the Iraqi government to intensify efforts to secure release of the kidnapped Qataris in Iraq and ensure their safe return to Qatar.
The meeting expressed grave concern over the continuing abduction of a number of Qatari nationals in southern Iraq, who entered Iraq with official permission from the Iraqi Interior Ministry, in coordination with the Iraqi embassy in Doha.
A joint statement issued at the conclusion of the meeting described the kidnapping as a flagrant violation of international law and human rights, Qatar News Agency reported.
The Committee signed a slew of agreements to boost cooperation between the two countries in areas of defence and security, economy and trade, investment, energy, industry, education, higher education, labor and social affairs, environment, media, youth and sports, transportation, communications and information technology, electricity and water, civil service and administrative development.
Agreements were also signed on air transport and cooperation in culture, art, higher education and scientific research, along with a memoranda of understanding on cooperation in oil and gas, petrochemical and industrial fields, civil service and administrative development.
Both sides also addressed the overall situation in the region and regional and international issues of mutual interest.
They agreed to hold the fifth session of the committee in Kuwait next year on a date to be fixed through diplomatic channels.
Foreign Minister H E Dr Khalid bin Mohamed Al Attiyah led the Qatari side in the meeting and the Kuwaiti side was headed by Kuwaiti First Deputy Premier and Foreign Minister Sheikh Sabah Khaled Al Hamad Al Sabah.
Addressing a joint press conference with Sheikh Sabah at the end of the fourth session of the committee, Dr. Al Attiyah said both sides discussed ways of promoting cooperation and reviewed regional and international issues in an atmosphere of friendliness, fraternity and understanding, which reflected the depth of historic and strong bilateral ties between them.
Sheikh Sabah said Kuwait is working to promote cooperation, particularly in the field of oil and gas, and benefit from the Qatari expertise to serve the interests of both countries on all fronts.
