Doha: Qatar is now entering Al-Sarayat season, a period of weather phenomenon characterized by dramatic and unpredictable atmospheric conditions that typically begins in late March and continues up until mid-May.
The Qatar Civil Aviation Authority’s Meteorology Department has issued a public advisory as the region prepares for sudden fast-changing weather patterns bringing short lived developing convective clouds that can quickly transform into intense thunderstorms.
Residents should also prepare for sudden heavy rapid rainfall, active lightening, and strong downdraft winds that may cause localized dust storms.
The name “Al-Sarayat” itself reflects the intermittent nature of these weather conditions, which tend to form during evening hours and can affect limited areas with significant intensity before dissipating.
It’s worth to note that the phenomenon typically creates a stunning visual of thundery clouds as storm cells pop up rapidly then vanish to thin air, often catching people off-guard.
Outdoor event organizers and those with activities planned between now and mid-May are advised to have contingency plans in place, as the unpredictable nature of Al-Sarayat season makes long-range forecasting particularly challenging during this period.
Residents are advised to take necessary precautions during thunderstorms, including staying indoors during lightning, avoiding flood-prone areas during heavy rain, and securing loose objects that could be affected by strong winds.
Weather authorities recommend staying updated with forecasts during this period, as conditions can change with little warning.
