Doha: Legends and top stars of both past and present will congregate at the 24th Men’s Handball World Championship in Doha this week.
Some of them have already hit the court while others either act as commentators and experts for the numerous TV networks or are here to simply enjoy this unique handball experience in Qatar.
One can get a glimpse of handball throughout the years on the first floor of Lusail’s Multipurpose Arena, where a Special Exhibition has been set for the duration of the tournament.
Valuable jerseys, pictures and information on some of the greatest handball stars ever like Arpad Sterbik, Ivano Balic, Nikola Karabatic, Mikkel Hansen, Magnus Wislander, Yoon Kyung-shin, Talant Dujshebaev and Jackson Richardson, are all part of the collection.
The exhibition focuses on the numerous successes of these great names from winning Olympic and World titles to European silverware. The collection is owned by Qatar’s national team physiotherapist Boris Vrhovac Vrle.
Boris who was born in Banja Luka, a city famous for its handball tradition, is now a citizen of Doha and has been collecting various jerseys from the greatest handball players for years.
His handball collection consists of 450 jerseys of the greatest players from different generations.
“I am very proud that the Organising Committee, the Qatar Handball Federation and the Museum of Sport, have recognised my work and dedication in preserving handball memorabilia,” he said.
And that’s not all! handball lovers have a chance to take a close look at some iconic handball medals up close.
Among the collection are Yugoslavia’s gold medal from the Olympic Games in Munich in 1972 and Croatia’s gold from Athens in 2004.
There are also French World Championship gold medals from 2001 and some most important Asian medals from various competitions. THE PENINSULA
