Doha: More than 300 healthcare professionals, including nurses, physicians and allied health professionals, attended an educational event organised by the Nursing Department at Hamad General Hospital (HGH) to highlight best nursing practices in the care of patients undergoing liver transplant surgery.
Amal Kamel Ali, Director of Nursing, Surgical Units and Lithotripsy, HGH, said, “This is a unique event which serves as a teaching intervention to promote up-to-date, evidence-based nursing practice and high-quality patient care.
“It will provide nursing professionals with the latest medical knowledge with the aim of enhancing patient outcomes.”
The event was held under the theme ‘Liver Transplant: The Journey’ and featured presentations by nurses and physicians on topics such as the latest management techniques in pre- and post-operative care, challenges and recommendations in caring for liver patients recovering from transplant surgery.
“The main idea behind the event is to recognise nurses who have demonstrated excellence in nursing care and allow them to share expertise with other healthcare professionals. Sharing of experiences, coupled with the latest evidence-based research findings, will positively affect delivery of care to our patients,” Ali added.
On the significance of the event for surgical nurses, she said nurses form the backbone of a surgical team.
“Surgical nurses work in a very challenging environment, where they often take key roles in life-saving surgical procedures.
“They are responsible for educating patients on procedures, provide medication and play an important role in their treatment journey. We consider it of utmost importance to highlight their role at a gathering like this where they can participate in open discussions with cross-unit and cross-division healthcare professionals to learn effective ways and identify the best strategies to improve patient experience.”
The event also highlighted local and international nursing healthcare trends and current research initiatives pertinent to liver transplant. This was the second nursing grand round at HMC to enhance the level of nursing care for all patients at Hamad Medical Corporation hospitals.
