The competition, dedicated to supporting both student and independent filmmakers, serves as a platform for local talents to shine on the global stage. The “Made in Qatar” category showcases a collection of short films crafted either in Qatar or by individuals calling it home, whether Qatari nationals or non-local residents.
Among the winners were Buthyna Al Mohammadi and Awad Karrar, who received a Special Jury Mention for their films “Above the Tamarind Tree” and “When It’s Time” respectively. Faisal Al Balushi was honoured with the Abdulaziz Jassim Award for Best Performance for his role in the film “Sanad,” while Nadia Al Khater clinched the Best Director title for “A Proposal.” The Best Film award went to Karima Emara for “The Chandelier.”
A panel of judges, including director and producer Tala Hadid, actress Yassmine Al Masri, and Dr. Firat Oruc from Georgetown University in Qatar, evaluated the 14 films screened in this category.
DFI Chief Executive Officer, Fatma Hassan Alremaihi, expressed her pride in the burgeoning talents emerging from Qatar’s film scene. “Year after year, amazing talents from Qatar tell compelling stories, and secure our place on the world stage.” She commended the winners and participants for showcasing the exceptional talent developed in Qatar and emphasised the country’s potential as a global creative leader.
“The 15 exciting filmmakers represent Qatar’s potential as a global creative leader through locally conceived ideas that expand beyond borders. We are grateful to each one of them for their dedication and courage in sharing their unique perspectives with the world.”
