Doha: In line with World Diabetes Day observed by Naseem Al Rabeeh Healthcare Group at Torch Tower Doha, doctors called for an increase in healthy eating and physical activity to reduce risk for the condition, which affects million people across the globe.
According to World Health Organisation (WHO), the number of people with diabetes globally is expected to soar to 592 million by 2035, an increase experts attribute to a combination of low physical activity and increased intake of unhealthy foods.
Dr Deepak Chandra Mohan from the Group presented a talk on role of drugs in diabetes management.
He said: “There are two main forms of diabetes: Type 1, in which the body is unable to produce the hormone insulin, and Type 2, in which the body is unable to use insulin effectively. Type 2 is the most common form, accounting for around 90 percent of diabetes cases worldwide.”
Dr Mohmmad Musthafa from the Group said: “People with diabetes are at much greater risk for poor cardiovascular health than the general population. The condition can increase heart attack risk by up to three times for men and five times for women.
“Women are normally protected from cardiovascular disease and get it later in life than men, but that benefit is eliminated if they have diabetes.” Doctors from the Group and private health centres, health insurance companies and corporate organisations attended. Dr Munir Ali Ibrahim, General Manager of the Group,  chaired the event and mementos were distributed to Dr Mohan and Dr Musthafa by Group CEO Babu Shanavas and  Dr Mohammad Kasim Harid, Medical Director, Naseem Al Rabeeh Medical Centre, respectively.
