‘Celebration of National Day represents unity of people’

Doha: The Ambassador of the Republic of Austria to the State of Qatar, Willi Kemble (pictured) stated that Qatar’s celebration of its National Day reflects the past when the Qatari people came together in 1878 for a journey towards togetherness and national strength. 

The Ambassador wished the State of Qatar and the Qatari people well in their aspirations to achieve further progress in their national development and international engagements.  

He pointed out that National Day celebrations constitute an important tool for fostering national identity and reflecting on origins of the past and challenges of the present and of the future. 

In a statement to Qatar News Agency (QNA), he spoke about Qatar’s multifaceted role at home on fields such as education, health and human rights as well as abroad in supporting peacebuilding, human rights mechanisms, reconciliation and humanitarian assistance. He said, “it seems beyond doubt that the State of Qatar will continue its constructive engagement for bettering the life of many people living under distress.”

The Ambassador praised Qatar’s recent reforms in the rule of law, labor and trade law and human rights. 

He stated that Qatar has used the last year and half to become more resilient as well reform its labor law and commercial law. He added that, apart from modernising legislation, these reforms meant implementing international human rights standards fully recognized by the International Labor Organization. 

He also said that Qatar, in 2017, took decisive measure to strengthen the rule of law and fight corruption by acceding to both to the Civil and Political Rights Covenant as well as the Economic, Social and Cultural Rights Covenant and the International Anti-Corruption Academy located in Austria; furthermore, Qatar was re-elected to the UN Human Rights Council for the period 2017-2019.
