DOHA: Qatar Airways (QA) crowned the winners of a poster-making contest at a fire safety awareness event held in the airline’s main offices in Doha.
Entries were submitted by QA staff and their family members in support of the ‘Fire safety at home’ theme, focusing on fire prevention and protection.
The winning entries were made into a calendar, with each month’s artwork accompanied by fire safety tips.
“QA is proud to call Doha home, and we are proud to support the national focus on safety with this innovative and creative contest,” said QA’s Senior Vice-President, Group Safety & Security, Ashish Jain.
“The vast majority of our 40,000 employees live in Doha, and we hope that by offering specific instruction on fire safety topics, we will contribute to better awareness throughout our home country.
“The success of the campaign is thanks to the extraordinary spirit of teamwork among all QA Group staff, who were highly motivated to support this important Civil Defence initiative.”
In support of Fire Safety Week, QA held a home fire simulation, demonstrating the best ways to address different kinds of kitchen fires.
Key learnings included ‘Look while you cook’ as it only takes a moment of inattention for a situation to get out of control; and the key factor during a fire or any other emergency is life safety and dialling 999 to inform the emergency services.
All participants in the poster contest were invited to the awards ceremony at QA Tower 2. The winners were: Tanshi Sivaraja, with Hiram Randive Thotawattage as runner up (Age group 0-5); Naeema Tabassum, with Raizza Margaret R Rano as runner up (6-10 years); Shuaib Muhammed Ali, with Seann Suley as runner up (11-16 years); Linov Suseelan with Ruwanthi Ileperuma as runner up (Age 17 and above).
The overall winner was Linov Suseela.
In addition to being included in the 2016 safety calendar, winners also received gifts provided by Oryx Rotana Hotel, Qatar Duty Free (QDF) and Qatar Aviation Catering Company (QACC).
Keith Hunter, Senior Vice-President, QDF, said: “The level of engagement among all QA Group staff has been extraordinary, and it is QDF’s honour to award the winners for their efforts.”
Another initiative launched as part of the safety drive is a fire awareness e-learning package which focuses on key fire safety messages such as advising staff to look before they lock, making sure all unnecessary electrical items such as air conditioning units are turned off before leaving accommodation unattended for any period of time.
This package will be directed to all staff.
